Do you like Chameleons? Then you will love the musical world of George Gershwin and his contemporaries, composers who moved freely among the classical, jazz, and Music Theatre genres. We ’ll hear “Trois Chansons de Bilitis” by Debussy, an early influence on Gershwin, sung by Chelsea Melamed Cushman, and “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” by Gershwin contemporary Cole Porter, sung by Janet Catherine Dea. The Heliconian String Quartet will illustrate Gershwin ’s classical style with “Lullaby,” and Caitlin Holland, Maria Soulis and others will bring us his show tune favourites “Summertime,” “Somebody Loves Me,” “Our Love is Here to Stay” and many more. Gershwin also composed many solo works for his main instrument, the piano, and our concert will include the “Three Preludes” played by Joan Zarryand the “Two Waltzes in C” played by Christine Hanson. During the concert we ’ll hear about Gershwin ’s life, musical influences, friends and collaborators from his longtime girlfriend, fellow composer Kay Swift (played by the Heliconian Club ’s own Catherine Vaneri)and we ’ll celebrate all that he accomplished before his untimely death at age 38. The concert takes place in Heliconian Hall on Friday, Mar. 4 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $30 including tax and a capital improvement fee.
