Thank you for your interest in being a safety attendant for the Heliconian Club!
We are planning a training date on February 17th at 1:00PM at the Club (as onsite training is required by the fire code). The training will be 1.5 to 2 hours. Coffee and refreshments will be provided.
Below is a list of an outline of the new responsibilities of safety attendants, and on the day of the training session we will be going over the building's fire system as well as other commonly used building amenities. Please review the material below.
If you would like to volunteer for the role, and you CAN attend FEBRUARY 17TH, please respond YES to attending the event.
If you would still like to volunteer for the role, and you CANNOT attend February 17th, please respond MAYBE to attending the event, and we will contact you about future Safety Attendant Training sessions. The RSVP buttons can't be edited, but in this case MAYBE = LATER.
If you are no longer interested in volunteering for the role, please respond NO to attending the event.
Thanks very much!

Safety Attendant Agreement:
Thank you for agreeing to be a safety attendant of the Heliconian Club.
Any time the building is open, a safety attendant must be in attendance, so only safety attendants have keys. The key and the code are not to be given to other people, whether they are members or not. If you are running late or have an emergency, please contact staff and/or another safety attendant to assist.
As part of the fire code, a list of supervisors for the building must be on file at all times in the building’s fire safety plan. In the case of an emergency, the plan will be referenced, and someone from that list must be on site. So by agreeing to be a safety attendant, you agree to being on the official list of building supervisors provided to the fire department.
As a safety attendant, in the case of an emergency, you will be responsible for enacting the fire safety plan. Per our plan, this includes the following:
At no point, shall a supervisor (safety attendant) take any action that will put the building in contravention of the Ontario Fire Code. Should they witness any contravention of the Ontario Fire Code, they are to correct it themselves and if not possible to do so, bring it to the attention of the Facilities Manager (call immediately) for immediate action.
Upon Discovery of Fire Conditions:
1) If safe to do so, help any person(s) that may be in the fire area.
2) Leave the area immediately and close any doors behind you while heading to safety.
3) Activate the fire alarm control system as soon as possible.
4) Evacuate the building.
5) Call 9-1-1 and report the emergency. Advise the operator that you have already activated the fire alarm control system, provide the address of the building, which floor and an approximate location of the fire in the building.
6) Attend the main entrance lobby and await the response of the firefighters. If the main entrance lobby is where the fire is located, meet the firefighters out-front of the building.
7) Provide access keys to the firefighters and assist them in any way that they request.
NOTE: DO NOT reset the fire alarm control panel prior to the attendance of the fire department. The fire alarm control panel is not to be reset until the firefighters tell you it is time to do so.
Upon Hearing the Fire Alarm System:
1) Remain calm and begin evacuating the area you are in. Close any intervening doors as you exit.
2) If you encounter smoke while you are evacuating, attempt to turn around and evacuate a different way.
3) If you are unable to evacuate the building safely, find a safe location (in a protected area as far as possible from the fire).
4) Take note of where you have taken refuge. Call 9-1-1 once you are in the safe location with the door closed. Inform the 9-1-1 operator of your location (ie: basement women’s washroom) and that you are unable to evacuate.
5) Follow all instructions provided to you by the operator and wait for help to arrive.
The use of fire suppressants, i.e. a fire extinguisher, is not required as it is not always safe to do so. But if you are able to safely suppress the fire, please do so. The location of suppression devices is part of the on-site training you will receive.
Fire drills, as required by the Ontario Fire Code, will be conducted at least once during each 12- month period. Safety attendants and staff are the only required people required to participate in the fire drill. Fire drills must be conducted in specific ways with specific procedures. Only staff can conduct this training. Safety attendants who have been trained may not train other members in a way that would certify that person as a safety attendant.
Additionally, as a safety attendant, you are responsible for ensuring that all rules, policies and laws are followed by occupants. Users are responsible for ensuring the space is reset at the end of the event. All food must be disposed of or taken home, dishes to be cleaned by the commercial dishwasher and garbages with contents that will smell be put in the bins outside. All event materials need to be returned to where they are stored or removed from the building. To clarify, safety attendants are not responsible for performing these duties themselves, but they are responsible for ensuring they are complete by the time the building is locked-up, and in the case of a rental, before the end of the rental period. If anything breaks or is damaged, staff must be notified. If the damage or breakage could impede proper locking of the building or the opening and running for the next event, staff must be notified immediately by phone (all safety attendants will have the cell phone number of staff). At the end of the event, the building must be securely locked and the security code reset.
