The early 20th century saw an ongoing expansion of musical language and form, from pre-war Impressionists to the charged postwar atmosphere of a century ago, a vibrant time described variously as the Roaring 20s, the Jazz Age and Les années folles. Works by Ravel, Canteloube, Poulenc, Fauré and others.

Echoes of the Avant-Garde, the VA section’s art exhibition, opens November 1 (2-5 pm) and another viewing opportunity takes place on November 12. The works on exhibit will take their inspiration from the vibrant, unorthodox and occasionally scandalous arts scene of 1920s and ‘30s Paris, and its artists of all genres. The show runs until November 26, with free public viewings.
And a screening of Jean Cocteau's celebrated film The Blood of a Poet with improvised, live musical accompaniment is set for Friday November 21 (7:30 pm). This event, In the Key of Cocteau, is a collaboration between the Toronto Silent Film Festival and North Wind Concerts, and musicians Ben Grossman, Alison Melville, Colin Savage and Deb Sinha will provide an ‘overture’ and ‘postlude’ as well as music for the film.
